They compared the MGS signal level between the DSP and the Block-V and the DSP. The PcNo values given by the Block-V and the Radio Science Stability Analyzer give very similar values. RSA readings of MGS signal after RIV filtering agree with BVR readings, e.g. BVR reading PcNo 37.731 dBHz at 093 122350 RSA reading 37.05 at 122944 BVR reading 37.068 at 123840 A comparison between cold sky and an ambient load (Y-factor test) also show that the signal level in the DSP is okay. -Trish ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Although a minor issue, the PcNo values quoted by Trish seem a little high. Using the link values in Table 6-17 of the MGS Telecom System Handbook (JPL D-14027) I get a predicted received carrier power Pc = -133.27 dBm. Including the nominal system noise temperature of 29.2K, this gives Pc/No = 50.68 dB. On 1998/093 the Earth-Mars range was slightly less than the value assumed in Table 6-17, and the reported SNT for the occultation (recording began at about 092000) was 30.58K; so our PcNo estimate may be low by ~0.3 dB. The measurements passed along by Trish were during a time when the SOE says the modulation index was 80 deg and ranging modulation was on. Together, those should reduce the PcNo value by 15.21+0.17 dB. That leaves us with a predicted PcNo = 35.5 dB, with perhaps an upward correction of ~0.3 dB. Elevation angle at the beginning of the occultation period was about 30 deg, and it increased to a peak of 60 deg at about 130000, very close to when the measurements were made at the station. The system temperature should go down as the elevation goes up (and the atmospheric attenuation will be reduced); but I'm hard pressed to make my 0.3 dB correction change to anything like 1.5 dB. This isn't the real problem, however. I will send you a package of plots. Set "A" are summary plots from 13 occultations. These give the histogram of sample values (upper left), power spectra averaged over 60 sec (upper right), and 1-sec averages of power versus time from raw sample values (lower left). Set "B" are single 60-sec power spectra from most of the occultations in "A". In each case, the "B" spectrum is the one giving highest PcNo in our processing for that occultation. The horizontal scale in the "B" plots is bin number; each bin has width 2500/512 = 4.88 Hz. The vertical scale is log(power); multiplying by 10 gives you dB. Don't worry about the absolute values on the vertical scales; a variable offset was added so that sets of spectra could be plotted in "waterfall" format. Fig B-9 shows the pre-occultation spectrum with best PcNo at DSS 65 only about 3 hrs before the station measurements above. The carrier peak is at 9.18 and an arithmetic average of the log noise values on the high side of the carrier gives 5.57. If we had chosen to take noise samples from the low side, the average would have been slightly higher. Using the high side noise, the PcNo is 43.0 dB, where we have added 6.89 dB to account for the conversion from 4.88 Hz bins to 1 Hz. Fig B-11 is the spectrum with best PcNo during the occultation immediately following the station measurements above. It was recorded at DSS 15. Following similar steps, we get PcNo = 49.2 dB. The difference between SPC 60 and SPC 10 is more than 6 dB. I will also include a copy of our current "occ.log" file which shows "Max SNR" in column 11. This number is slightly higher in the log file; the algorithm in our quick-look software is more sophisticated than my simple-minded measurements on the plots here. But you can see that differences are comparable. Our standard processing gives 44.0 and 50.9 dB for the two cases above. I was surprised at the difference in the filters at SPC 60 and the other two complexes. The 2000 Hz filters at SPCs 10 and 40 are remarkably flat -- probably good to a couple tenths of a dB. The filter at SPC 60 has a ripple that may exceed 2 dB. This isn't enough to explain the 6 dB difference that we typically see in the open loop data, but it does suggest that the hardware in Spain isn't the same as at the other two complexes. You can look through the other plots, but I think you'll find the results are consistent with our conclusion that SPC 60 carrier to noise levels are significantly lower than levels at the other two complexes. Given the station measurements that Trish passed along, I don't know how to explain the difference. But, I'm convinced that there is a difference in the samples that are delivered to the end user.
