The following info is relevant to science data processing sensitive to S/C attitude. John Nichols (LMA) reports that, due to processing a star not contained in the MGS on-board star catalog, the S/C erroneously off-earth pointed on Sunday 4/26. The following details were provided: a. Off-point orientation occurred following P-264 and persisted thru P-265 b. The off-point orientation caused loss of the first playback of P-264 data c. Off-point magnitude is estimated at +/- (0.7 to 0.9) degrees d. Off-point was corrected during post P-265 attitude maintenance John reminded me that this type of error is expected to occur from time-to-time due to how the S/C is being operating (instrument teams should already be familiar with this possibility). Also, LMA plans to notify us of details of each occurrance. We saw a puzzling 1 dB increase in signal level as the spacecraft HGA began its pre-periapsis slew on 1997-04-27 at approximately 04:34 ERT. This would have been just prior to our Occultation #161i and would have been consistent with an HGA pointing error of 0.5 deg (or more). Carrier-to-noise level prior to the HGA slew was about 0.7 dB below the previous pass at the same antenna, consistent with a pointing error of ~0.4 deg. But both passes were 2-3 dB below expected levels.
