Simpson Stanford University ============================================================================== INTRODUCTION ============================================================================== This file contains an accumulation of corrections and notes for the Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science Team Raw Data Archive - Mars Orbit Insertion Phase. ============================================================================== CORRECTIONS AND NOTES ============================================================================== MORS_0201 Because of a one second timing error, solar array CK files for thru 97/212 through 97/337 were regenerated. The new MOI files MORS_0231 (97/256 through 97/337) are on MORS_0234. MORS_0201 CALINFO.TXT was omitted from the CALIB directory on all volumes. thru MORS_0303 MORS_0201 RECORD_BYTES was incorrectly given as 80 in CATALOG/PERSON.CAT. thru Should be corrected on MORS_0331 and later volumes. MORS_0330 MORS_0201 There are scattered instances of non-standard ASCII characters thru in some text files. These were probably introduced by word MORS_0359 processing software during compilation of the files. Non- standard characters include the TAB character, "smart" quotes, and non-standard hyphens. Expect these in: Many files in HEA directories Most labels in ODR directories Some files in the CATALOG directory Software Interface Specifications in the DOCUMENT directory DOCUMENT/TRK_2_24.TXT was omitted from all but the last few volumes. Virtually all labels for data types ECH, MCH, ODF, ODR, and TDF have MISSION_PHASE_NAME set to "CRUISE" rather than the correct "MOI". The official beginning of the Orbit Insertion Phase has been defined as 1997-09-12; when this data set was assembled, the beginning date was understood to be 1997-09-02. Thus, the first few volumes in this data set include files which properly belong in the MGS-M-RSS-1-CRU-V1.0 data set. With few exceptions (perhaps 4), the values for MISSION_NAME and INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME in labels for SAK files are "MARS_GLOBAL_SURVEYOR". This is an illegal value; double quotes or underscores are acceptable, but not both and not neither. 9035069A.IPN is a trajectory reconstruction by the Inner Planet Navigation Group at JPL. Although it covers 1999-02-04 to 1999-03-10, the file was created long after the Orbit Insertion Phase ended. It and any other IPN files covering Orbit Insertion will be stored on volumes in the Mapping raw data set. In AAREADME.TXT PCKydddA.PCK is incorrectly described as a leap second file; it is actuall a planetary constants file. Although DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT on MORS_0210 through at least MORS_0210 shows TRK_2_18.TXT and TRK_2_25.TXT to be on the volume, there is a separate note to the effect that neither file will appear after April 1997. The required keyword PDS_ADDRESS_BOOK_FLAG is missing from CATALOG/PERSON.CAT on all volumes. REFERENCE_KEY_ID = "SIMPSON1993" in CATALOG/REF.CAT should have REFERENCE_DESC = "SIMPSON, R.A., SPACECRAFT STUDIES OF PLANETARY SURFACES USING BISTATIC RADAR, IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING, V. 31, NO. 2, PP. 465-482, MARCH 1993." The author's name is missing. REFERENCE_KEY_ID = "ALBEEETAL1992" in CATALOG/REF.CAT should have REFERENCE_DESC = "ALBEE, A.L., R.E. ARVIDSON, AND F.D. PALLUCONI, MARS OBSERVER MISSION, JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH, 97, 7665-7680, 1992". Palluconi's initials are reversed. Inclusion of ECH and MCH files on archival volumes presumed that software would be available to carry out decommutation and decalibration (conversion of the packed binary format to user-friendly values). The software used at Stanford was a combination of JPL-provided 'DMD'-based utilities and locally written display routines. Each time the JPL package was updated (typically yearly) a significant effort was needed to bring the pipeline back to working order. The upgrade in early 2007 not only changed the software functionality but also completely rearranged the directory structure of the JPL routines (to be commensurate with a reorganization of the responsible software groups at JPL). With little expectation that there would be new ECH and MCH data because of the spacecraft loss in November 2006, we reluctantly decided not to invest the effort needed to restore ECH and MCH processing. As a result, there is no working software at Stanford which could reprocess ECH or MCH files from the MOI data set. MORS_0203 The MCH directory mistakenly contains CSV7252A.MCH and its label. Although these are permitted under the design in MGSRSSIS.TXT, CSV files from engineering data are not included in this volume, nor are CSV files planned for other volumes. MORS_0203 No spacecraft or DSN Monitor data collected on 97/253 (NERT Cache MORS_0204 unavailable). MORS_0204 HEA/HEA7255A.PS1 and HEA7255A.PS2 do not have PDS labels. MORS_0206 1997-09-16 (97/259) Engineering data not available after ~1600. HEA/HEA7260A.PS1 does not have a PDS label. MORS_0207 1997-09-18 (97/261) Engineering data not available after about 0400; DSN Monitor data not available after about 1800. MORS_0208 HEA/HEA7266A.PS1 does not have a PDS label. MORS_0209 1997-09-26 (97/269) Engineering and DSN Monitor data not available for 97/269. HEA/HEA7269A.PS1 and HEA/HEA7272A.PS1 do not have PDS labels. MORS_0211 1997-10-02 (97/275) Engineering data terminated at about 18h by STOP command from Query Control. VOLUME_NAME should show coverage including 1997-10-02. MORS_0212 SAK/7275275B.SAK is a duplicate of SAK/7275275A.SAK on MORS_0211. A different file with the name 7275275B.SAK appears on MORS_0234; the file on MORS_0234 should be used for analysis. MORS_0212 1997-10-03 (97/276) through 1997-10-10 (97/283) spacecraft MORS_0213 engineering data (ECH) were only partially acquired because of NERT Cache, NASCOM line, and/or SOPC hardware problems. Some DSN Monitor data were also truncated for the same reason. MORS_0213 HEA/HEA7283A.PS1 does not have a PDS label. MORS_0217 1997-10-20 (97/293) engineering and monitor data were lost through an operations error at Stanford. 1997-10-23 (97/296) through most of 1997-10-26 (97/299) engineering and monitor data were lost because the NASCOM line went down. MORS_0218 HEA/HEA7301A.PS1 and HEA/HEA8302A.PS1 do not have PDS labels. MORS_0219 HEA/HEA7303A.PS1 and HEA/HEA8304A.PS1 do not have PDS labels. MORS_0221 File 7302310L.SFO in the SFO directory is a bogus file. The same data are in 7302310B.SFO on MORS_0219. Keyword WSE_FILTER added to queries for engineering data starting 97/310; removes "bad records" which caused apparently toggling of data in channels L-0061 and L-0091. HEA/HEA7311A.PS1 does not have a PDS label. MORS_0224 Beginning on 97/316, queries for spacecraft engineering, DSN monitor, and open-loop data were made with the JPL-provided utility stot. Tom Boreham recommended this; he said stot handles time-out and similar conditions better than uTotFile. MORS_0225 The CALIB directory was omitted. Files from CALIB on any other recent volume (e.g., MORS-0224) could be substituted. MORS_0226 AAREADME.TXT: Added list of acronyms and abbreviations. Removed references to RSC11_11.TXT. INDEX/INDEX.LBL: DATA_SET_ID moved from object to label section. INDEX/CUMINDEX.LBL: DATA_SET_ID same as for INDEX.LBL CATALOG: Editorial improvements to DATASET.CAT, INST.CAT, INSTHOST.CAT, MISSION.CAT, and REF.CAT. DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT: Removed section on RSC11_11.TXT. Editorial corrections. DOCUMENT/MGSRSSIS.TXT: Editorial changes; now version 1.0.2. MORS_0226 INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB: File erroneously contains listings from thru MORS_0130 and MORS_0131. MORS_0277 MORS_0228 No spacecraft engineering data 1997-11-25 (97/329)(query failed) MORS_0229 MPF data type added; SIS update pending. MORS_0234 Because of a one second timing error, solar array CK files for 97/212 through 97/337 were regenerated. The new MOI files (97/256 through 97/337) are on MORS_0234. SAK/7275275B.SAK on this volume has the same name as a different file on MORS_0212. The version on MORS_0234 should be used for analysis. The CALIB directory is missing from this volume. Users can obtain the needed files from MORS_0233, MORS_0235, or any other nearby volume. MORS_0234 Error in INDEX/INDEX.TAB entry for 7343344A.ODF propagated to thru CUMINDEX.TAB for 3 volumes. Corrected on MORS_0237. MORS_0236 MORS_0237 Incomplete channelized spacecraft engineering data (97/352); query terminated by STOP command from query control. MORS_0239 Incomplete channelized spacecraft engineering data (97/360); query terminated by STOP command from query control. MORS_0242 In VOLDESC.CAT the VOLUME_NAME keyword shows year 1997; it thru should be 1998. Also beware similar problems with years MORS_0274 in the AAREADME.TXT INTRODUCTION on these same volumes. For best information on this data set, use the AAREADME.TXT on the latest version of the final volume (MORS_0359). MORS_0246 8015015B.ODF has an incorrect ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID in label; thru the correct value should be 98015O1410.DAT_v1. INDEX.TAB MORS_0320 and CUMINDEX.TAB in INDEX directory have the incorrect value until corrected in MORS_0321. MORS_0248 File name 8018018A.ODF is a duplicate. A file with the same name is on MORS_0247, and this file under the name 8018018B.ODF is also on MORS_0247. MORS_0250 80241915.ODR contains useless data. Buffer problems caused loss of 202 records; remaining data do not have accurate time tags. First radio occultation during aerobraking. Because telemetry was turned off during the occultation (and spacecraft engineering data was not saved on the tape recorder), there is no attitude reconstruction (TCK data) during the occultation. This was the case through the entire series of occultations (to late April 1998). MORS_0251 Engineering data is split into two files on 98/029. SCET errors caused query failures, so some data had to be skipped. HEA/HEA8029A.PS1 does not have a PDS label. MORS_0256 TDF/8036037A.TDF is not listed in either INDEX/INDEX.TAB or INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB. The CUMINDEX.TAB error was corrected before the final version of MORS_0359 was produced. MORS_0261 Some files normally expected in the CALIB directory are missing. These files can be found on nearby volumes (e.g., MORS_0260) if needed. MORS_0262 Engineering data split into two files on 98/063; neither has more than a couple hours. Query failures on read errors. MORS_0263 80670339.ODR has 15 missing records (and about 10000 duplicate records). 8067033J.ODR on MORS_0264 has the missing records filled in following a retransmission. The following files appear on both MORS_0262 and MORS_0263: ODR/80642006.ODR ODR/80651003.ODR OPT/8061068A.OPT OPT/8061068B.OPT OPT/8063069A.OPT OPT/8063070A.OPT SAK/8061061A.SAK SAK/8062062A.SAK MORS_0264 8068071A.ODR is a complete file, based on retransmitted data. It has many duplicate records (DSP/NBOC buffer errors). Its predecessor 80680710.ODR was removed from the system because it contained less than 3 minutes of data. 8067033J.ODR has many duplicate records. 80692353.ODR has 7 missing records after the occultation. 8069069A.ECH contains only about 13 hours of data; the query failed on a read error and there wasn't time to try again. 8069075B.SPK is a duplicate of 8069075A.SPK and should not have appeared in this volume. MORS_0269 There were two health reports for 1998/084. HEA8084A.TXT (on this volume) was written but not distributed. A revised report (HEA8084B.TXT) was distributed on 1998/089; it can be found on MORS_0271. The later version should be considered the true health report for 1998/084. Supplementary health report HEA8083B.TXT was distributed on 98/089 and is included in MORS_0271. MORS_0270 With end of Aerobraking Phase 1, the MGS NAV Team switched to a much less intensive schedule. SPK files were released only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And each SPK file included only one reconstructed orbit. Since reconstructed orbits are required for proper reduction of occultation data, quality of the atmospheric profiles from this point through the end of April 1998 was lower. Reconstructions by the Smith group at GSFC were available for some orbits, but often delayed compared with the NAV Team releases. MORS_0271 80860223.ODR suffered errors during local processing. The query was resubmitted, and the new file became 8086022D.ODR. The original file (80860223.ODR) was removed from the collection. Beginning 98/087, MGS NAV delivered SPK files only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each file was based on a single orbit reconstruction. Hence, during the week, only 1 orbit in 4 was reconstructed; on weekends, only 1 orbit in 6 was reconstructed. The quality of the orbits between varied. Some open loop data from the weekend 98/087-98/089 was judged to be of a quality that wouldn't allow extraction of atmospheric profiles when processed with the Project-provided SPK file. The situation was expected to continue at least through the summer. MORS_0273 First volume with data type ECT (Engineering Channel Table). HEA/HEA8096A.PS1 and its label were omitted from the volume. They are included in MORS_0359 version 2, renamed HEA8096B*. MORS_0274 HEA/HEA8098A.PS1 does not have a PDS label. MORS_0275 First volume with data type GDN (GEODYN Quick-Look SPK files). Revised MGSRSSIS.TXT in DOCUMENT directory includes ECT and GDN data types; minor editorial updates. MORS_0276 SOE/8108111D.SOE on this volume is a duplicate (and was not formatted correctly). The original, and correctly formatted, file is on MORS_0275. SOE/8108111E.SOE and its label were not formatted correctly. MORS_0277 ODR/81071155.ODR on this volume is a duplicate; the file also appears in MORS_0276. MORS_0280 Updated CATALOG/DATASET.CAT file. MORS_0282 8123124B.ODF incorrectly appears in the ODF directory on this volume. It had previously been archived on MORS_0281. MORS_0282 8134135B.ODF has an incorrect ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID in label; thru the correct value should be 98134O135_10S.SJO_V1. INDEX.TAB MORS_0320 and CUMINDEX.TAB in INDEX directory have the incorrect value until corrected in MORS_0321. MORS_0284 File names 8100103A.GDN, 8103107A.GDN, 8107110A.GDN, and 8114117A.GDN were incorrectly used a second time on this CD. The previous instances appeared on MORS_0281. The source files were different in all cases. The files were later renamed and a new version of the CD was cut (MORS_0284;2). The files affected were: Original File Name New Name (on MORS_0284;2) -------------------------------- ---------------- gdn_ql04_804100000_804140000.tsp 8100103X.GDN gdn_ql04_804132300_804171200.tsp 8103107X.GDN gdn_ql04_804170000_804121000.tsp 8107110X.GDN gdn_ql04_804240000_804280000.tsp 8114117X.GDN On Version 2 8103107X.GDN was incorrectly listed as 8103107x.GDN in the INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB files. This error persisted through the remainder of the original volume set. MORS_0284 INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB will show duplicate entries for thru 8100103A.GDN, 8103107A.GDN, 8107110A.GDN, and 8114117A.GDN MORS_0359 on Version 1 of these CDs. MORS_0285 REPORT.TXT, a diagnostic file generated during creation of the CD, was mistakenly left in the root. In the TRO directory, there are three files with two labels each. The data files are 8152159A.TRO, 8152166A.TRO, and 8152173A.TRO. The labels are misnamed, having digits "0" and "1" rather than the required "A". MORS_0287 Queries submitted soon after change of UTC day were not picking up all spacecraft engineering data for the previous 24 hours, apparently because some of the data were played back from tape on a delayed basis. Queries were submitted for 98/146 through 98/175 a second time; those ECH and ECT files appear on this CD with file names xxxxxxxB.ECH and xxxxxxxB.ECT, respectively. The difference was typically a factor of 2-3 increase in the volume of ECH data. FILE_NAME in the following labels contains an extra character. The value of PRODUCT_ID is correct. ECH/8170170B.LBL ECH/8171171B.LBL ECH/8172172B.LBL Data type GDF was added to the archive. GDF_SPK.TXT was added to the DOCUMENT directory; DOCINFO.TXT and MGSRSSIS.TXT were updated to reflect the changes. MORS_0288 SFDU label on DOCUMENT/TRK_2_23.TXT removed; label changed to indicate file has FIXED_LENGTH records of 80 bytes. Directory ECS contains three new summary tables of spacecraft channelized engineering data. File 7125244A.ECS is from MGS Cruise rather than Orbit Insertion. Its label should point toward 7125244A.ECS rather than 7104244A.ECS. Directory ECT contains files TUS8189A.ECT and TUS8190A.ECT (and their labels). These are repeated on MORS_0289, which is the ONLY volume where they should appear. MORS_0290 File 8001194E.WEA in the WEA directory should be ignored. Use 80012014.WEA instead. File 8202204A.TDF is missing from the TDF directory although its label is present. It has not been found. MORS_0291 OPTG predict files in the OPT directory have incorrect START_TIME and STOP times in their labels. The years should be 2000 and 2001 instead of 1900 and 1901, respectively. Label files in the OPT directory with this error are: 0015016A.LBL 0046047A.LBL 0075076A.LBL 0106107A.LBL 0136137A.LBL 0167168A.LBL 0197198A.LBL 0228229A.LBL 0259260A.LBL 0289290A.LBL 0320321A.LBL 0350351A.LBL 1015016A.LBL 1046047A.LBL 1073075A.LBL MORS_0291 8182213D.ION has an incorrect ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID in label; thru the correct value should be IONCAL_94_9807_DORP.CSP_v1. MORS_0320 INDEX.TAB and CUMINDEX.TAB in INDEX directory have the incorrect value until corrected in MORS_0321. Same problem with label for 8213244A.ION; correct value should be ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID = "IONCAL_94_9808_DOPR.CSP_v1". MORS_0292 HEA/HEA8219A.TXT is repeated from MORS_0291. MORS_0294 ERRATA.TXT line 17 is more than 80 characters long. VOLDESC.CAT shows VOLUME_VERSION_ID = "VERSION V" rather than VOLUME_VERSION_ID = "1" MORS_0295 Because of a software error, ECT files were not created for days and 244-252, inclusive. MORS_0296 MORS_0295 Format of MGS-provided SOE files changed in early September 1998. thru Collection of SOEs was suspended until software was revised in MORS_0329 December. A backlog of 166 SOE files appears on MORS_0330. MORS_0298 TDF/8260261A.TDF and its label are repeated from MORS_0297. MORS_0299 8271271A.ODF has an incorrect ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID in label; thru the correct value should be 98271O1945.DAT_v1. MORS_0320 INDEX.TAB and CUMINDEX.TAB in INDEX directory have the incorrect value, compounded by addition of non-printing characters, until fixed in MORS_0321. Same problem with label for 8271272A.ODF; correct value should be ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID = "98271O272.DAT_v1". MORS_0301 There are spurious ECH and MCH directories inside directory TDF. MORS_0308 In the AMD directory, the following do not have labels: 8299299C.AMD 8300300A.AMD 8300300B.AMD Since they do not have labels, they do not appear in the INDEX files. The files were copied, new labels were generated, and they appear on MORS_0359 (version 2) as, respectively, 8299299D.AMD 8300300D.AMD 8300300E.AMD MORS_0311 ODR/83081342.ODR may be data suffering from the DSP 'sawtooth' anomaly. But the carrier was not in the passband, so there is no way to confirm the problem. 8274305.TRO has an incorrect ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID in label; the correct value should be TROPCAL_94_9810_DOPR.CSP_v1. INDEX.TAB and CUMINDEX.TAB in INDEX directory have the incorrect value until fixed in MORS_0321. MORS_0317 The following ODF files contain DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. The corrected file 8324337A.ODF on volume MORS_0327 should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8324325A.ODF 8325326A.ODF 8325327A.ODF 8326327A.ODF 8327327A.ODF 8327328A.ODF MORS_0318 The file ECT/TUS8328A.ECT appears on both this volume and MORS_0319. It should have appeared only on MORS_0319. MORS_0319 ODR/83291919.ODR contains only 19 sec of data. For the complete occultation, see ODR/8329191J.ODR on MORS_0321. The following ODF files contain DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. The corrected file 8324337A.ODF on volume MORS_0327 should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8327328B.ODF 8328329A.ODF MORS_0320 The following ODF files contain DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. The corrected file 8324337A.ODF on volume MORS_0327 should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8329331A.ODF 8331332A.ODF 8332333A.ODF 8333334A.ODF MORS_0321 The following ODF file contains DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. The corrected file 8324337A.ODF on volume MORS_0327 should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8334335A.ODF The following TDF files contain DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. Corrected files ("B" versions) on MORS_0328 should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8325326A.TDF 8326327A.TDF 8327328A.TDF 8328330A.TDF MORS_0322 The following ODF files contain DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. The corrected file 8324337A.ODF on volume MORS_0327 should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8335336A.ODF 8336337A.ODF 8337338A.ODF The following file in the ODF directory apparently was part of a Y2000 test and does not contain real data 9365002A.ODF The following TDF files contain DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. Corrected files ("B" versions) on MORS_0329 should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8332333A.TDF 8333334A.TDF 8334335A.TDF MORS_0324 ODR/83391841.ODR contains records from two DSPs running simultaneously. Use ODR/8339184B.ODR on MORS_0325 instead. MORS_0325 The following TDF file contains DSS 65 exciter values for S-band rather than X-band. Corrected file (8335337B.TDF) on MORS_0329) should be used for DSS 65 instead: 8335337A.TDF MORS_0327 The following file in the ODF directory apparently was part of a Y2000 test and does not contain real data 9365002B.ODF MORS_0327 CATALOG/REF.CAT has an extra "END" line in the middle of the thru file. Any volume for which a Version 2 was produced should MORS_0359 not have this problem. MORS_0335 Last line in table in AAREADME.TXT has 1998, where it should be 1999. MORS_0336 Labels for SOE files contain incorrect PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME. Date component is correct; set time to 23:59:59 if needed. MORS_0337 Width of the field for ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID in INDEX.TAB and CUMINDEX.TAB in the INDEX directory was increased by 2 bytes.
