Input data are from radio tracking of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft; no Mariner 9 or Viking data are included. Coordinate system is IAU 1991 (Davies et al., Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, 53, 377-397, 1992). The model was constructed from 353,648 observations, summarized in the table below. MGS data are limited to tracking from the Aerobraking Hiatus and Science Phasing Orbit (SPO) subphases of the Orbit Insertion phase of the mission and to February and March 1999 after the orbit was circularized. Time Periods Total ----------------------- ------------ Hiatus and SPO 257165 February and March 1999 96483 ----------------------- ------------ Total 353648 Performance of the gravity model can be evaluated by computing the orbit position discrepancy between overlapping arcs. The set of overlapping arcs included twelve overlaps of thirteen 30-hour arcs in February 1999 (overlap length was six hours) and six overlaps of five- to six-day arcs in March. Results are summarized in the table below (note that these results followed incorporation of improved solar array and spacecraft quaternions, which were not actually used in the MGM0964C18 solution). Or, see Lemoine et al., Paper AAS 99-328, Astrodynamics Specialist Conference, Girdwood, Alaska, 16-19 August 1999. This paper describes both MGM0964C18 and an improved model, MGM0964C20. Further improvements to the model are expected as additional MGS data are incorporated. This product is a set of two ASCII tables: a header table and a coefficients table. Definitions of the tables follow. This Mars gravity model was produced under the direction of D.E. Smith of the MGS Radio Science Team."
