Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter SHARAD U.S. Radargrams Bundle Release Notes This document, release_notes.txt, contains release notes and errata concerning the MRO SHARAD U.S. Radargrams Bundle. It is updated with each release of data. For releases prior to MRO release 70, the information here is a copy of the PDS3 ERRATA.TXT file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION Users are encouraged to provide comments to the PDS Geosciences Node if errors are found either in data or in documentation in this archive. Updates will be reported in this file. Older versions of data may not be retained in the archive. This file is divided into sections based on the nature of the errata comments: 1.0 Known Errors and Anomalies; 2.0 New File Additions; 3.0 Modifications to Existing Files. New comments are added at the beginning of each section as appropriate. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 KNOWN ERRORS AND ANOMALIES 2024-12-02 The rounding error described below exists in 3 geometry data files in this delivery. 2024-08-30 The rounding error described below exists in 5 geometry data files in this delivery. 2024-07-12 A rounding error exists in the value of TIME (field/column 2) in one or two records in each of 660 SHARAD geometry data (*.tab) files. These entries list a seconds value of 60 rather than rounding up the time to the next minute. These data files will be reprocessed to correct this issue at a later date. 2016-06-02 Prior to orbit 42949, SHARAD product IDs were based on the orbit number with some other digits appended. This Product ID (PID) is limited to a 32-bit number at the spacecraft level. When MRO reached orbit 42949 the SHARAD PID reached the 32-bit limit and, as a consequence, SHARAD observations could no longer be uniquely numbered. The SHARAD Ops team at ASI designed a new PID numbering scheme. Between exceeding the limit and restarting observations with a newly designed PID, seven weeks elapsed. As such, the last valid observation with a unique old-style PID is from orbit 42948. The first valid observation with the new-style PID is from orbit 43605. 2.0 NEW FILE ADDITIONS 2026-02-27 Release 45 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2025-05-05 through 2025-08-14 (orbits 88003 through 89295). This is also release 76 of MRO Project data. 2025-12-01 Release 44 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2025-02-08 through 2025-05-05 (orbits 86901 through 87998). This is also release 75 of MRO Project data. 2025-08-29 Release 43 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2024-11-14 through 2025-02-08 (orbits 85801 through 86899). This is also release 74 of MRO Project data. 2025-05-30 Release 42 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2024-08-13 through 2024-11-14 (orbits 84607 through 85798). This is also release 73 of MRO Project data. 2025-02-28 Release 41 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2024-05-11 through 2024-08-12 (orbits 83401 through 84590). This is also release 70 of MRO Project data. 2024-07-12 This dataset has been migrated to the PDS4 standard. See mro_sharad_us_radargram_pds4_notes.pdf in the document collection for details. 2024-05-31 Release 38 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2023-08-13 through 2023-11-04 (orbits 79901 through 80973). This is also release 69 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2024-03-01 Release 37 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2023-05-11 through 2023-08-13 (orbits 78701 through 79898). This is also release 68 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2023-12-01 Release 36 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2023-02-15 through 2023-05-11 (orbits 77600 through 78698). This is also release 67 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2023-09-01 Release 35 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2022-11-13 through 2023-02-14 (orbits 76401 through 77599). This is also release 66 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2023-06-01 Release 34 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2022-08-28 through 2022-11-13 (orbits 75407 through 76399). This is also release 65 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2023-03-01 Release 33 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2022-05-26 through 2022-08-20 (orbits 74204 through 75313). This is also release 64 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2022-12-01 Release 32 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2022-02-13 through 2022-05-25 (orbits 72900 through 74199). This is also release 63 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2022-09-01 Release 31 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2021-11-12 through 2022-02-13 (orbits 71700 through 72898). This is also release 62 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2022-06-01 Release 30 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2021-08-10 through 2021-11-12 (orbits 70500 through 71698). This is also release 61 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. There are no data between 2021-09-25 and 2021-10-24 due to Mars Solar Conjunction. The instrument was shut down during this time. 2022-03-01 Release 29 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2021-05-25 through 2021-08-10 (orbits 69503 through 70498). This is also release 60 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2021-12-07 Reprocessed SHARAD radargram data are added to volume MROSH_2101. Included in this release are reprocessed data from 2014-01-13 through 2015-02-06 (orbits 35003 through 39994). 428 previously-released labels on volume MROSH_2101 had incorrect values for DATA_SET_ID. This error was fixed with this release. 2021-12-01 Release 28 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2021-02-28 through 2021-05-24 (orbits 68399 through 69498). This is also release 59 of MRO Project data. Also released are reprocessed SHARAD radargram data, including data acquired from 2007-08-21 through 2008-09-13 (orbits 05000 through 09993) and 2010-11-01 through 2014-01-13 (orbits 20000 through 34996). The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2021-11-12 Reprocessed SHARAD radargram data are added to volume MROSH_2101. Included in this release are reprocessed data from 2006-12-06 through 2007-08-20, 2008-09-13 through 2010-11-01, and 2015-02-07 through 2017-03-27 (orbits 01689-04999, 10000-19999, and 40000-49999, respectively). 2021-10-12 Reprocessed SHARAD radargram data are added to volume MROSH_2101. Included in this release are reprocessed data from 2017-03-17 through 2018-04-20 (orbits 50000 through 54999). 2021-10-01 Reprocessed SHARAD radargram data are added to volume MROSH_2101. Included in this release are reprocessed data from 2018-04-21 through 2020-08-09 (orbits 55000 through 65799). 2021-09-01 Release 27 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2020-11-11 through 2021-02-17 (orbits 67001 through 68267). This is also release 58 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release are available on volume MROSH_2101. 2021-06-01 Release 26 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2020-08-09 through 2020-11-10 (orbits 65801 through 66998). This is also release 57 of MRO Project data. The data included in this release were processed with an improved version of the SHARAD processor that resolves some significant quality issues and adds filtering to reduce background electrical noise. These data are available on volume MROSH_2101. All previously released data from volume MROSH_2001 will be reprocessed using this new processor and gradually added to the new volume MROSH_2101. Volume MROSH_2001 will remain online until all data are reprocessed. 2021-03-01 Release 25 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2020-05-08 through 2020-08-09 (orbits 64600 through 65799). This is also release 56 of MRO Project data. 2020-12-01 Release 24 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2020-03-01 through 2020-05-07 (orbits 63726 through 64597). There are no SHARAD data from 2020-02-09 through 2020-02-29 due to MRO maintenance. This is also release 55 of MRO Project data. 2020-09-01 Release 23 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2019-11-18 through 2020-02-08 (orbits 62400 through 63455). This is also release 54 of MRO Project data. 2020-06-01 Release 22 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2019-08-09 through 2019-11-18 (orbits 61105 through 62399). This is also release 53 of MRO Project data. 2020-02-28 Release 21 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2019-05-23 through 2019-08-09 (orbits 60104 through 61097). This is also release 52 of MRO Project data. 2019-11-27 Release 20 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2019-02-11 through 2019-05-23 (orbits 58805 through 60098). This is also release 51 of MRO Project data. 2019-09-01 Release 19 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2018-12-02 through 2019-02-11 (orbits 57890 through 58798). This is also release 50 of MRO Project data. 2019-06-01 Release 18 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2018-08-16 through 2018-10-15 (orbits 56501 through 57279). SHARAD stopped observing on Oct. 15 in preparation for MRO's data relay tasks during Mars Insight arrival and landing. Observing resumed Dec. 1. This is also release 49 of MRO Project data. 2019-03-01 Release 17 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2018-04-21 through 2018-08-15 (orbits 55000 through 56499). This is also release 48 of MRO Project data. 2018-11-30 Release 16 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2018-02-10 through 2018-04-20 (orbits 54101 through 54998). This is also release 47 of MRO Project data. 2018-08-31 Release 15 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2017-11-16 through 2018-02-09 (orbits 53001 through 54099). This is also release 46 of MRO Project data. 2018-06-01 Release 14 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2017-08-15 through 2017-11-15 (orbits 51804 through 52995). This is also release 45 of MRO Project data. 2018-03-01 Release 13 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2017-05-13 through 2017-08-14 (orbits 50602 through 51797). This is also release 44 of MRO Project data. 2017-12-01 Release 12 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2017-02-16 through 2017-05-12 (orbits 49500 through 50596). This is also release 43 of MRO Project data. 2017-09-01 Release 11 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2016-11-07 through 2017-02-16 (orbits 48202 through 49499). This is also release 42 of MRO Project data. 2017-07-01 Release 10 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2016-05-12 through 2016-11-06 (orbits 45901 through 48196). These data correspond to releases 40 and 41 of MRO Project data. 2017-03-01 Release 9 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2016-02-08 through 2016-05-11 (orbits 44700 through 45899). These data correspond to release 39 of MRO Project data. Release 40 data are in preparation. 2016-09-01 Release 8 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2015-11-15 through 2016-02-08 (orbits 43605 through 44699). This is also release 38 of MRO Project data. 2016-06-01 Release 7 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2015-08-13 through 2015-09-24 (orbits 42400 through 42948). This is also release 37 of MRO Project data. 2016-03-01 Release 6 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2015-05-04 through 2015-08-13 (orbits 41102 through 42396). This is also release 36 of MRO Project data, and from now on the U.S. SHARAD radargram data will follow the quarterly MRO Project release schedule. 2015-09-01 Release 5 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2014-10-05 through 2015-05-03 (orbits 38403 through 41098). 2015-05-27 Release 4 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2013-05-25 through 2014-10-05 (orbits 32004 through 38399). 2014-10-20 Release 3 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2010-09-08 through 2013-05-22 (orbits 19301 through 31965). Also included are some data from earlier orbits that were missing from previous releases (orbits 7899 through 10703). 2014-08-13 Release 2 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2007-12-15 through 2010-09-08 (orbits 6500 through 19298). 2014-07-11 Release 1 of SHARAD radargram data includes data acquired from 2006-12-06 through 2007-12-15 (orbits 1689 through 6499). 3.0 MODIFICATIONS TO EXISTING FILES 2023-12-01 Several SHARAD geometry data labels for files that had been previously revised had incorrect DATA_SET_IDs. This has been fixed. 2023-08-15 Many SHARAD geometry data files have been revised. This change affects only the latitude and longitude coordinates of the SHARAD radargram frames contained in the GEOM files. The prior version derived these locations by interpolating between orbit track ephemeris values at 10-second posting. This method introduces small uncertainties relative to the 128-pixels-per-degree sampling of the ground track for most of Mars. At high latitudes the longitude changes more rapidly and positional errors can be on the 1-2 km scale, or several grid cells in a 128-ppd map. The revised values come from spacecraft positional information associated with every radar pulse as part of the Experiment Data Record. PRODUCT_VERSION_ID is now "V2" in the labels for the revised data products. 2015-10-02 All SHARAD radargram data from Release 5 (orbits 38403 through 41098) have been revised due to a processing error that was discovered. PRODUCT_VERSION_ID is now "V2" in all labels for these data products. 2015-01-23 All SHARAD radargram data have been revised due to a multiplicative scaling offset error that was discovered. PRODUCT_VERSION_ID is now "V2" in all data product labels.
