This experiment was designated CB-8. This was the fourth step of a 4-step sequence which combusted a triple portion sample from the Cumberland drill site, loaded on top of the residue from the previous CB-2 single-portion experiment. In the first step, the sample was heated to approximately 550 deg C with no added oxygen, then held at this temperature for 25 minutes. After that experiment, the pyrolysis cup was returned to the sample handling system overnight to allow accumulation of background volatiles onto the sample. At the start of the second step, the cup was returned to the oven, and oxygen from the SAM oxygen tank was added. The sample was heated to 550 deg C again, then held at that temperature for 25 minutes. Afterward, the QMS sampled the gas as it was expanded from the oven into the manifold and TLS, followed by TLS analysis. For the third step, oxygen from the SAM tank was introduced to the oven again, then the oven was heated to 950 deg C and held at that temperature for 25 minutes. The QMS and TLS analyzed the gas in the same manner as the previous step. The cup was left in the oven overnight following the third step. For the fourth and final step, oxygen from the SAM oxygen tank was introduced, then the sample was heated to 950 deg C and held at that temperature for 25 min, followed by QMS and TLS analysis as in the previous steps.
