Kahan Jet Propulsion Laboratory ============================================================================== INTRODUCTION ============================================================================== This file contains an accumulation of corrections and notes for the 2001 Mars Odyssey Radio Science Raw Data Archive - Mapping Phase. ============================================================================== CORRECTIONS AND NOTES ============================================================================== All CATALOG/TARGET.CAT is provided as a convenience to users. The Volumes values included do not meet any particular acceptance standard, and the file is not updated on any regular schedule. Users needing values to high accuracy/reliability should confirm numbers in TARGET.CAT against another source. TARGET.CAT was not used during the archiving process. CALIB/PCK7323A.TPC is also somewhat out of date. New constants were adopted by the IAU in 2000, but a new PCK file has not been created by NAIF. ODRS_0001 This volume was incorrectly labeled ODY_0001 when mastered. A new version (ODRS_0001;2) was created on which this error and several of the others noted here were corrected. Note that ODRS_0001;2 will have INDEX, AAREADME.TXT, and ERRATA.TXT files which cover more than the first volume. ODRS_0001 AAREADME.TXT is not clear regarding the coverage of this data set. thru Data were collected starting about 2002-01-01, during the final ODRS_0004 stages of ODY aerobraking. The Mapping Phase of the mission began in mid February 2002. So the majority of data are from Mapping, but a few of the early files cover Aerobraking. Corrected on ODRS_0001;2. Lines in CALIB/PCK7323A.TPC are delimited by two ASCII carriage returns and an ASCII line feed. The extra carriage return was removed starting with volume ODRS_0005. Corrected on ODRS_0001;2. ODRS_0001 DATA_SET_NAME in CATALOG/DATASET.CAT is incorrect. It should be thru "2001 MARS ODYSSEY RADIO SCIENCE RAW DATA SET - V1.0" ODRS_0006 ODRS_0001 The LSK and PCK files found on these volumes may be labeled for thru Mars Express or Mars Global Surveyor. Files on these volumes may ODRS_0232 also not be up to date. Use files from ODRS_0233 or later for the best information. ODRS_0003 This is the first volume containing TDF files. The first file in this set was mistakenly named 2037039B.TDF because a test entry had not been removed from the data base. The 2037039A.TDF on ODRS_0012 is an identical copy of 2037039B.TDF. The two RSR files on this volume cover deployment of the high-gain antenna. 2037030A.RSR data were collected at DSS 14 using a 2 ksps sampling rate with 16-bit I and 16-bit Q samples. The same parameters were used at DSS 43 for 2037030B.RSR. For unknown reasons, the DSS 43 data have significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio. Data were also collected at 16 ksps; see ODRS_0005 and later volumes for those files. ODRS_0005 These RSR files were collected at DSS 14 using 16 ksps 16-bit I/Q samples and cover deployment of the high-gain antenna. There is a gap of 27 minutes 31 seconds between 2037030C.RSR and 20370413.RSR. Reason for the gap is unknown, but it was repeated on several queries spaced over several days. Before the data could be returned from the station via ftp, RSR engineers erased it. 16 ksps data were collected at DSS 43 (see 2037030D.RSR and 20370430.RSR on later volumes) with no gap; 2 ksps data were collected at both stations (see 2037030A.RSR and 2037030B.RSR on ODRS_0003). The lower right panel in BRO/2037030C.PS1 shows 20370305.RSR as the source file for these plots. The correct source file is 2037030C.RSR. ODRS_0006 The FILE_NAME keyword was omitted from PDS labels in the SPK directory. This was corrected in Version 2 of the CD. On Version 2 of this CD, files describing the new SFF data type were included even though no SFF data is on the CD. The fact that SFF_SIS.TXT appears in the DOCUMENT directory was not mentioned in DOCINFO.TXT. ODRS_0007 First volume with Small Forces Files (SFFs). SFF files contain information on spacecraft thruster activity. During the MGS mission, thruster activity was included in Angular Momentum Desaturation files (AMD directory). AMD files are not being generated for the ODY mission, so the SFF data type is being substituted. SFFs are described by SFF_SIS.TXT in the DOCUMENT directory. Files for days 051, 052, 054, 055, 056, 069, and 070 may have repeated packets. For possibly cleaner versions of these files, see ODRS_0018. The first SFF file (SFF/2011016A.SFF) is a PDS TABLE object, described by its label. Each line in the table summarizes thruster activity for a single event. All other SFF files are text files covering 24-hour periods; they are described by SFF_SIS.TXT in the DOCUMENT directory. Individual files for days 011-016 appear on ODRS_0018. Beginning with this volume, the INDEX.TAB and CUMINDEX.TAB files in the INDEX directory include new columns for PRODUCT_TYPE, RELEASE_ID, and RELEASE_DATE. In general, the RELEASE_DATE for the current release will be set to 0000-00-00; the real date will be substituted later to reflect when the volume actually went on-line at the PDS Geoscience web site. ODRS_0008 On two days, no SFF data could be found on the query server; so the following files in the SFF directory do not exist: 2153153A.SFF 2170170A.SFF ODRS_0008 The file SPK/2151158A.SPK was mistakenly omitted from this volume. It appears instead in volume MORS_0036. ODRS_0009 In the ION directory, file 2182213B.ION was created after both 2182213C.ION or 2182213D.ION and may contain better data. ODRS_0010 AAREADME.TXT shows the wrong coverage for ODRS_0010. This was fixed in AAREADME.TXT for ODRS_0011. Solar conjunction occurred on 2002-08-12; radiometric data coverage during this period was limited. ODRS_0012 TDF/2037039A.TDF is an identical copy of TDF/2037039B.TDF on ODRS_0003. ODRS_0001 Labels for SPK files include the spurious keyword KERNEL_TYPE_ID, thru which should be ignored. ODRS_0013 ODRS_0015 File 2154155A.TDF in the TDF directory was edited to remove six leading Tracking Data Logical Records which appeared to have originated on 2002/001. RMDCT believes this resulted from loss of lock during data acquisition and the data would have been useful if the time tags had been changed. We opted to remove the 6 questionable records out of a total of more than 130000. ODRS_0018 This volume contains individual SFF files for days 011-016; revised files for days 051, 052, 054, 055, 056, 069, and 070; and completely new data (did not exist before) for days 010 and 017-047. ODRS_0023 TDF/2350352A.TDF has been edited to remove corrupted records at the end of original file 02350t353.sc53. See NOTE in the label file for details. ODRS_0024 ODF/3057058B.ODF has an incorrect File Creation Date in the ODF File Label Group Data record. The format is supposed to be YYMMDD, but the value is 20030227. When converted to the value for PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME in ODF/3057058B.LBL, the year became 3903. This propagated into INDEX/{,CUM}INDEX.TAB. The CUMINDEX.TAB entry was corrected on ODRS_0026. ODRS_0025 During the Network Simplification Plan upgrade (approximately March 2003), some tracking data were acquired with stations using incompatible systems. For example, three-way TDFs in which the uplink station was NSP (DSS 25) and the downlink station was not (DSS 14) will be incomplete or incorrect. Users should be alert to inconsistencies in these data. ODFs acquired using the same systems were corrected, but TDFs (because of their lower popularity and greater complexity) were not. Data in ODF/3064064A.ODF and ODF/3066070A.ODF have incorrect File Creation Dates in the ODF File Label Group Data record. This is the same problem as reported for ODRS_0024 except that the value in the label file for each has been corrected. ODF/3080083A.ODF also has an incorrect File Creation Date in the ODF File Label Group Data record. This is noted above but the value in the label file (and in INDEX/{,CUM}INDEX.TAB) waqs not corrected until ODRS_0026. ODRS_0027 Because of problems accessing SFF data in M01_MASTER_QueryServer that was more than 30 days old, queries were switched to M01_CDR_QueryServer starting with 2003/091. ODRS_0031 No SFF data could be found for the days 2003/152 through 159, inclusive. Reason is not known. ODRS_0032 In the CATALOG directory, the DATASET.CAT file is missing the thru DATA_SET_REFERENCE_INFORMATION for MANNUCCIETAL1998. In REF.CAT ODRS_0033 Mannucci is spelled incorrectly. ODRS_0034 CALIB/TSC00069.LBL points to FILE_NAME = TSC00067.SCK; the version 1 volume was remastered and this problem was corrected on version 2. ODRS_0035 CALIB/TSC00069.LBL points to FILE_NAME = TSC00067.SCK; the version 1 volume was remastered and this problem was corrected on version 2. The following files in the TCK directory had incorrect labels. For version 2 of this volume the entire collection (31 files) was downloaded again from the NAIF ftp server and new labels were generated. 3217217A.TCK 3225225A.TCK 3228229A.TCK 3238238A.TCK 3241241A.TCK ODRS_0036 File SPK/2151158A.SPK should have appeared in ODRS_0008. ODRS_0036 SFF data for days 253-258 were lost. ODRS_0041 TNF data for the following passes were delayed and appear on ODRS_0043: DSS Start Date/Time Stop Date/Time --- ----------------- ----------------- 14 2003-322T22:05:00 2003-323T08:00:00 45 2003-323T03:55:00 2003-323T05:40:00 The following TNF file on ODRS_0041 is incomplete and should be replaced by the corresponding TNF file on ODRS_0043: DSS Start Date/Time Stop Date/Time ODRS_0041 ODRS_0043 --- ----------------- ----------------- ------------ ------------ 14 2003-323T22:00:00 2003-324T08:00:00 3323W14A.TNF 3323W14B.TNF ODRS_0043 TNF data for the DSS 14 pass on day 352 and for the DSS 34 pass on day 353 could not be found and are not included in the archive. Coverage shown in AAREADME.TXT and by VOLUME_NAME in VOLDESC.CAT is incorrect. The ODFs cover 2003-12-03 to 2003-12-30, and that defines the coverage of the volume. ODRS_0048 Added the following keywords to CATALOG/DATASET.CAT: ABSTRACT_DESC ARCHIVE_STATUS CITATION_DESC ODRS_0061 The OPT, SPK, and SOE files for June were accidently omitted thru from these volumes. The files were included on ODRS_0066. ODRS_0063 ODRS_0078 Released with the wrong release number (32 instead of 31.) V2 was supposed to fix that, but was created with the wrong data. V3 should be correct. ODRS_0079 The entries in CUMINDEX.TAB for ODRS_0078 incorrectly show them thru as being in release 32 rather than 31 as they should be. This ODRS_0081 is fixed in ODRS_0078 V3 and in ODRS_0082 and later. ODRS_0081 File /SOE/5013041A.SOE exists in both ODRS_0081 and ODRS_0083. thru The version on ODRS_0083 is more recent and a superset of that on ODRS_0089 ODRS_0081. The version on ODRS_0081 should not be used. As of ODRS_0090 CUMINDEX.TAB has been updated to remove the entry for the file in ODRS_0081. ODRS_0104 Corrected some long-standing line-delimiter errors in DOCUMENT/LIT_SIS/HTM. Corrected a bug in OPT labels which had the pointer ^DESCRIPTION erroneously equal to a text string. ODRS_0105 The release dates for release 0046 were listed as 0000-00-00. The thru correct date is 2006-03-17. This is corrected in release 0048. ODRS_0106 ODRS_0108 About half the SFF files in this collection are empty. If we can retrieve data for these days it will appear in ODRS_0109. ODRS_0108 I have produced a second version of ODRS_0108 without the empty V2 SFF files ODRS_0133 There are only two ODF files in this collection. I'll collect the rest and include them in the next collection. ODRS_0144 I don't have an official release date for ODRS_0143 yet so it will stay 0000-00-00 until I can fix it in ODRS_0145 ODRS_0236 Effective April 28, 2017 the DSN will cease generation of the TRK-2-18 (ODF) product for Mars 2001 Odyssey. Start and end dates for the collection will be those from the TNF files rather than from the ODF files. ODRS_0248 The Stanford computer used to collect and label ODY files failed after delivery of ODRS_0247. Because most of the software was more than 10 years old, large portions of the code had to be rewritten to run on a different platform. There are many small changes between ODRS_0247 and ODRS_0248, but the format and content of the data files should be the same. For example, the number of EOP and WEA files is much reduced; but the files that are included provide the same coverage as before. There is no CALIB directory in volume ODRS_0248. ODRS_0249 The diagram showing directory and file structure in AAREADME.TXT has some of the file names in the CALIB directory wrong. The description in CALIB/CALINFO.TXT contains similar errors. These were corrected in ODRS_0250. ODRS_0253 The content of AAREADME.TXT and CATALOG/DATASET.CAT was updated to reflect changes over the many years of ODY operation. The changes are relatively minor - for example the transition from TDF and ODF to TNF is explained more clearly and the switch to default bimonthly archiving is noted. ODRS_0259 The label for TNF/K030N14A.TNF shows Mars Express values for MISSION_NAME, INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME, INSTRUMENT_HOST_ID, and DATA_SET_ID. The data file contains Mars Odyssey data. This error has not been corrected. ODRS_0260 In the directory SFF, the file K087087A.SFF has an unusually large volume (1.9 MB); most files are 12 kB. No data could be obtained from the query server for days 088 and 089. Normal data collection resumed on day 090. The reasons for this unusual behavior are not known. There is a larger file on day 056 (2.5 MB), but there was no interruption in SFF files on following days. The ERRATA.TXT file was incorrectly dated 2019-04-13 TNF coverage only extended from 2020-032 to 2020-03-09. The remaining files (covering 2020-03-10 through 2020-03-31) are included in ODRS_0261. ODRS_0261 No SFF data could be obtained from the query server for days 2020-103, 112, and 120. As was the case with missing SFF files in ODRS_0260, the reason is not known. ODRS_0262 No SFF data could be obtained from the query server for days 2020-127 to 2020-182. As was the case with missing SFF files in the previous two volumes, the reason is not known. ODRS_0263 Most of the missing SFF data that should have been included in ODRS_0262 were recovered and are included in this volume. SFF data from days 127, 135, 157, and 160 were lost. ODRS_0264 There was an interruption in regular collection of AGK, SAK, and TCK files in October 2020. As a result, the daily files for 2020-09-30 were lost. As a substitute, the aggregate files covering July-September were included in this volume. These are large files (especially K183274A.TCK) but they do cover the times of interest. ODRS_0265 There are no EOP or WEA files in this volume. The EOP files in the previous volume (ODRS_0264) cover this time period. Several labels for TNF files with data from days 2020/300 to 2020/305 had incorrect values for FILE_CREATION_TIME; the bad values propagated into INDEX/INDEX/TAB (and CUMINDEX.TAB). The dates were corrected by creating a version 2 of ODRS_0265. ODRS_0266 Incorrect PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME dates were created for some TNF labels. Those were corrected and a version 2 of the volume was mastered and distributed. This was the first volume created and distributed electronically with only a DVD backup at the origination site. These were the first volumes produced at The SETI Institute in Mountain View, CA. AAREADME.TXT, VOLDESC.CAT, and PERSON.CAT files were updated accordingly. ODRS_0267 There were no AGK, SAK, or TCK files for 2021-01-10. The reason is not known. The TCK file for 2021-02-04 has an incorrect START_TIME of 1980-01-01T00:00:00.000, which prevented automatic labeling. A label was generated manually with START_TIME 2021-02-04T00:00:00.000. ODRS_0268 TNFs from these three DSN passes were temporarily lost when they fell between two collection requests: DSS-35 2021-069T06:30:00 2021-069T10:45:00 DSS-54 2021-069T16:50:00 2021-069T20:00:00 DSS-63 2021-069T19:50:00 2021-069T23:20:00 They are included in ODRS_0269. ODRS_0270 There were no SFF files for days 2021-08-07 and 2021-08-22. ODRS_0271 Assembly of the archival volume was automated by using a script to copy, sort, and label component files. More EOP files will be included in this and future volumes; fewer SOE files (generally the last of several covering a sequencing interval will be included). Changed address of SETI Institute. ODRS_0272 There were no SFF files for days 2021-12-02, 2021-12-17, and 2021-12-27. ODRS_0273 Because of an unusual combination of 'natural' forces on the spacecraft, the cadence of angular momentum desaturation events was reduced to one every 38 hours during late January and early February 2022. On average that means that there is typically no SFF file every third day.
