RADIO SCIENCE DOCUMENTATION BUNDLE Overview ======== The Radio Science Documentation (RSD) bundle contains documents that are likely to be referenced in PDS4 radio science archives. Data providers may reference these documents without needing to include them as primary members of their own archives. Inspecting the RSD bundle may remind data providers of documents that they were not initially planning to include. The bundle is not exhaustive; the most commonly needed documents have been included first. The bundle will be updated as time and resources allow and as additional material becomes available. With one exception, each bundle member collection contains a single Software Interface Specification (SIS) or an equivalent document describing a radio science data product at the bit or byte level. In some cases, a collection contains SIS versions spread over a decade or more. Each version of the SIS is stored as a separate document product within the collection, with its version ID set to 1.0. In this way, new versions of the SIS may be added to the collection as they become available without fear that the PDS Search function will hide older versions as though they had been superseded. Additional versions may be added to a collection in any order; that is, older versions may be added after newer versions without upsetting the organizational paradyme. Data providers must be alert to SIS updates and make certain that the new reference is substituted in product labels when a SIS is updated. Meanwhile, older labels will continue to reference the older version(s) of the SIS. The exception is the DOCUMENT directory within the RSD bundle; it contains non-SIS documents that provide background information on radio science investigations, analyses, and/or data products -- but not at the bit or byte level. Members of the DOCUMENT collection are typically journal publications, technical reports, and similar documents that do not have copyright restrictions on distribution. Naming Conventions ================== The following conventions have been adopted for SIS logical identifiers (LIDs), file names, and directory names in the RSD bundle. A. SIS Documents/Collections: ------------------------- A.1. Logical Identifiers (LIDs) Logical Identifiers (LIDs) will have the form: urn:nasa:pds:radiosci.documentation:: (for NASA/PDS) where collection_id is set to . and organization_id is a mnemonic for the organization or agency which released the document or file. For example: dsn document_id is an easily recognized identifier for the document or other file. For example trk-2-18 (DSN SIS) odf07155 (example data file) product_id is set to the release date in YYYY[-MM[-DD]] format For example: urn:nasa:pds:radiosci.documentation:dsn.trk-2-18:1988-01-15 (TRK-2-15 SIS dated 1988-01-15) urn:nasa:pds:radiosci.documentation:dsn.trk-2-18:odf07155 (example TRK-2-18 data product) A.2. Directory Names: Directory names are in upper case. They will begin with the organization or agency ID then be followed by an underscore "_" and finally the document or file ID. The ASCII hyphen "-" may appear in a directory name, but the ASCII period "." is not allowed. For example: DSN_TRK-2-18 A.3. File Names: File names will be in lower case. Document file names will begin with the organization or agency ID, be followed by an ASCII underscore, the document ID, an ASCII period, and finally the release date in YYYY[-MM[-DD]] format. Bundle and Collection labels, readme files, and Inventory files will begin with bundle_* or collection_*, as appropriate. The file name extension will identify the file type. Names of supporting or component files may follow other conventions. For example: collection_dsn_0159-science.xml collection_dsn_trk-2-18.csv dsn_trk-2-18.1998-01-15.txt dsn_trk-2-18.odf07155.dat dsn_trk-2-18.odf_unpack.pdf B. Non-SIS Documents ----------------- The following conventions have been adopted for logical identifiers (LIDs) and files within the 'document' collection of the RSD bundle. B.1. Logical Identifiers (LIDs): Logical Identifiers will have the form: urn:nasa:pds:radiosci.documentation:document:. where author is the lower-case name of the lead author (or source organization in absence of a known author) date is publication year, optionally followed by a lower-case letter to distinguish like-named products For example: urn:nasa:pds:radiosci.documentation:document:moyer.2000 urn:nasa:pds:radiosci.documentation:document:rssg.1985a B.2. Directory Names: The directory name for the 'document' collection within the RSD bundle will be (upper case) DOCUMENT. B.3. File Names: File names will be in lower case. Document file names will begin with the lead author's last name and be followed by an ASCII period, the publication year, a second ASCII period, and the file name extension. For cases in which two or more author.date combinations will appear in the directory, a lower case letter will be appended to the date to distinguish the files. The file name extension will indicate the file format. For example: moyer.2000.pdf rssg.1985a.txt Bundle Version History ====================== Bundle Modification Version Date Description ------- ------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.1 2021-08-23 The following changes were made after Version 3.0 was posted.
