Viking Lander 2 Release Notes This file contains release notes concerning the PDS4 migration of the Viking Lander 2 seismic dataset. The PDS4 dataset includes the seismic data files, their old PDS3 labels, the new PDS4 labels, documentation, and two products in the miscellaneous collection. 1. Corrections to PDS3 labels A few of the PDS3 labels (*.lbl) in the original dataset had minor errors. In a few cases the name of fields were wrong, e.g., the field name referred the wrong seismometer axis. Simmilarly, there were a few cases where the field descriptions listed the wrong seismometer axis. Another error was for the data types of data fields where integer values were listed as real values and vice versa. 2. PDS3 catalog files The PDS3 catalog files describing the seismic dataset and seismometer instrument were edited and converted to ASCII text documents. These are included in document collection. Descriptions of the Viking Lander spacecraft and the Viking mission are also included and were taken from the Lander image bundle. 3. PDS3 "extras" directory PDS3 had a concept called "extras" where a dataset could put material in a directory named extras that was not considered part of the dataset. Extras were supposed to be items that were not essential to a PDS3 dataset, but could be of use to data users. Typically material in "extras" was not labeled and could be in formats not supported by PDS. PDS4 does not have an "extras" concept. Everything in PDS4 is a product and products require valid PDS4 labels. The PDS3 seismic dataset contains an extras directory with files that are useful to keep with the PDS4 dataset. PDS4 labels have been created for these and they are included in either the document or miscellaneous collection. 3.A. An example script for plotting seismic data (example_plotting_r_script.txt) is included in document collection. PDS does not archive software, but will include source code as documentation to help users access data. As such, this sample data plotting script was moved from the PDS3 "extras" directory to the document collection and a PDS4 label is provided. 3.B. The PDS3 "extras" also included a list of sampler arm activities for Viking Lander 2. Movement of the sampler arm could have generated responses in the seismic data. The list of sampling activities and an explanation of file contents was moved to the miscellaneous collection and PDS4 labels were created. 4. PDS3 index file PDS3 required an index file listing the data files in a dataset. PDS4 does not require such a file because the collection product has an inventory of members of each collection. The PDS3 index file in the seismic dataset has little information that would be helpful for the PDS4 dataset. Thus, it was left out of the PDS4 dataset version.
